Integrated Basins

An integrated basin is formed as one piece with the countertop, usually in solid surface. There is no seam, no sealant line and no rim, which is why hospitality and multi-unit projects specify them so consistently: the thing that fails in a hotel bathroom is almost always a joint, and this construction has none.
The tradeoffs are real. The bowl cannot be changed independently, the top is made to a specific length so it must be right at drawing stage, and a damaged bowl means addressing the whole top. Against that, solid surface is repairable in place, which softens the last point considerably: a scratch or a burn can be sanded out rather than replaced.

Undermount and Drop-In

An undermount basin is fixed beneath the countertop so the top surface runs continuously to the bowl opening. It cleans well from above, because there is no rim to trap residue, and it looks close to an integrated basin at lower cost when the top is stone or quartz.
The junction still exists, it is just hidden. It is sealed with adhesive and sealant under the top, in exactly the place where water collects and dries. In domestic use this is usually fine for many years. In heavy commercial use it is the detail that eventually needs attention.
A drop-in basin reverses the relationship: the bowl drops through the hole and its rim rests on the top. It is the cheapest to fit and the cheapest to replace, and the rim is a permanent cleaning line. For rental and budget work that replaceability is a genuine advantage.

Vessel Basins

A vessel basin sits entirely on the counter. It is the most visually distinctive option and the one most often specified without accounting for its consequences.
The main consequence is height. A vessel adds 4 to 6 inches above the counter, so fitting one to a comfort-height cabinet puts the rim around 40 inches, which is uncomfortable for most adults and unusable for children. The cabinet must come down to roughly 29 to 32 inches to compensate.
The second consequence is the tap. A standard basin tap will not reach over a vessel rim, so a tall vessel tap or a wall-mounted tap is required, and that decision has to be made before the top is drilled or the wall is closed up.

Set the visual preference aside for a moment and choose by how the bathroom is used and who maintains it.

Whichever type is chosen, settle the tap and waste with it. Tap hole count, hole spacing, tap height and waste type all follow from the basin decision, and all of them are drilled or specified before anything ships.
