Alcove Installation

The alcove tub is the workhorse of apartment and hotel bathrooms and it deserves more respect than it gets. Three walls do the containment, one apron faces the room, and a shower can be fitted over it without any additional footprint.
It is the most space-efficient option by a wide margin, and it is the cheapest to install because there is no deck to build and no additional finishing. It also puts the whole tub against walls, which means waterproofing is a straightforward junction detail rather than a set of separate ones.
Its limitations are real. The tub must fit the alcove exactly, or a filler strip appears; the apron finish is part of the tub rather than the room; and access to the waste after installation is usually through an access panel that someone has to remember to include.

Drop-In and Undermount

Both of these sit in a deck, and the deck is the point. It provides a surface to sit on when getting in, a place to put things, and a way to make the tub read as part of the architecture rather than as an object placed in the room.
The difference between them mirrors basin fitting. A drop-in rests its rim on the deck, which is simpler and cheaper and leaves a rim edge to clean. An undermount is fixed beneath a machined opening so the deck surface runs continuously to the tub, which looks better and costs more.
For older users, the deck is a genuine accessibility feature: sitting on the edge and swinging the legs over is much safer than stepping over a high rim. That is a stronger argument for a deck than any aesthetic one.

Freestanding Installation

A freestanding tub is a piece of furniture in a room. It needs walking space around it, it needs a floor that can take the concentrated load, and it makes its plumbing part of the design because there is nowhere to hide it.
That last point drives more decisions than people expect. The filler is usually floor-mounted or wall-mounted, both of which are fixed decisions made before floors and walls are finished. The waste runs through the floor, which means the drain position must be set precisely, and moving it later means opening the floor.
Cleaning is the other consideration. A freestanding tub has a floor underneath it and a gap behind it, and both need to be reachable. In a family bathroom that gap is a permanent minor annoyance; in a hotel it is a housekeeping cost.

One point applies across all four: settle the waste position and the filler type on the drawing before anything is built. These are the two decisions that are cheapest on paper and most expensive after the floor is laid.
