It is the most space-efficient option by a wide margin, and it is the cheapest to install because there is no deck to build and no additional finishing. It also puts the whole tub against walls, which means waterproofing is a straightforward junction detail rather than a set of separate ones.

Its limitations are real. The tub must fit the alcove exactly, or a filler strip appears; the apron finish is part of the tub rather than the room; and access to the waste after installation is usually through an access panel that someone has to remember to include.

Drop-In and Undermount

Both of these sit in a deck, and the deck is the point. It provides a surface to sit on when getting in, a place to put things, and a way to make the tub read as part of the architecture rather than as an object placed in the room.

The difference between them mirrors basin fitting. A drop-in rests its rim on the deck, which is simpler and cheaper and leaves a rim edge to clean. An undermount is fixed beneath a machined opening so the deck surface runs continuously to the tub, which looks better and costs more.

For older users, the deck is a genuine accessibility feature: sitting on the edge and swinging the legs over is much safer than stepping over a high rim. That is a stronger argument for a deck than any aesthetic one.
