Mounting and Configuration Terms

These describe where the tap fixes, and they are the terms most often mismatched between quotations.

| Deck-mounted | Fixed through the countertop or the basin |
| Wall-mounted | Valve body in the wall, only spout and handles visible |
| Projection | How far a wall-mounted spout reaches from the finished wall |
| Spout reach | How far a deck spout extends over the basin |
| Tall / vessel tap | A raised deck tap that clears a bowl standing on the counter |
| Floor-standing | A tap rising from the floor, used with freestanding baths |
| Rough-in | The concealed valve body and its fixed position, set before tiling |
Valve and Cartridge Terms

These describe how water is controlled, and they determine both feel and service life.

| Ceramic disc | Two polished ceramic discs sliding over each other; the modern standard |
| Compression / washer | An older design using a rubber washer against a seat |
| Mixer | Combines hot and cold through one outlet |
| Thermostatic | Holds a set temperature despite supply pressure changes |
| Pressure balanced | Maintains the hot-cold ratio when pressure changes |
| Diverter | Directs flow between two outlets, such as head and hand shower |
| Concealed valve | A valve body buried in the wall behind a plate |
| Exposed valve | A valve mounted on the wall surface |
| Service access | How a concealed valve can be reached for repair |
Two of these decide most of the long-term satisfaction. The cartridge, because it is the wearing part and its availability years later determines whether a tap is repairable. And service access on a concealed valve, because a valve that cannot be reached without opening a wall is a maintenance problem waiting for its moment.
Flow and Performance Terms

These describe how much water comes out, and several are regulated by market.

| Aerator | A screen at the spout mixing air into the stream |
| Flow restrictor | An insert limiting the maximum flow rate |
| Working pressure | The supply pressure range a fitting is designed for |
| Low pressure rated | Designed to work with gravity-fed or low-pressure supplies |
| Rain head | A large overhead shower head giving a soft wide spray |
| Hand shower | A handheld outlet on a hose |
| Shower column | A vertical assembly combining head, hand shower and controls |
| Body jets | Additional wall outlets in a shower system |
Flow rate is worth checking twice for a shower system. A rain head and a hand shower running together can exceed both the supply capacity and the drain capacity, and the failure appears as poor performance or a flooding shower floor rather than as a fault in either component.
Finish and Material Terms

These describe the surface, and the process matters more than the color name.

| Powder coated | A polymer coating cured onto the surface |
| Brushed | Plated then abraded to a directional texture |
| Salt spray hours | A corrosion test figure allowing finishes to be compared |
| Cartridge warranty | The period the control unit is warranted for, often separate |
Ask for the substrate and the finish process together. A brass body with a PVD finish and a stated salt spray figure is a different product from a zinc alloy body with a sprayed coating, and the two can look identical in a photograph and in the first year.
