Deck-Mounted Faucets

The deck-mounted faucet is the default for good practical reasons. It is easy to install, easy to service, and easy to replace with a different model years later provided the hole configuration matches.
Three hole configurations dominate: a single hole for a monobloc mixer, three holes at a standard spread for a widespread set with separate handles, and two holes for a spout and single handle. The center distance on a widespread set is a specification that must match between the faucet and the drilled top, and it is a common source of mismatch when the two are ordered separately.
The cost of a deck faucet is the base. Water and residue collect around it, and cleaning it is a daily nuisance in a way that a wall faucet simply is not. On a stone or solid surface counter this is where limescale accumulates first.

Wall-Mounted Faucets

A wall-mounted faucet gives the cleanest possible counter: nothing on the surface, nothing to clean around, and no hole in an otherwise continuous top. On an integrated basin top it preserves the seamlessness that was the point of specifying one.
It also allows a basin that has no tap hole at all, which opens up freestanding and sculptural basins that would otherwise need a floor-standing faucet.
The commitments are real. The valve body sits inside the wall, so servicing it means access through the wall or through a panel designed in advance. A leak inside the wall is discovered late. And the two rough-in dimensions, height above the finished basin rim and projection from the finished wall face, are fixed before tiling and determine which faucets will ever work in that position.

Getting the Rough-In Right

Two numbers govern, and both are derived from the basin rather than chosen generically.
Projection is how far the spout reaches out from the finished wall. It must place the water stream over the drain of the specific basin, not near it. Too short and water runs down the back of the bowl; too long and it hits the front edge or splashes past. Calculate it from the basin's depth and drain position, on a drawing.
Height is measured from the finished basin rim to the spout centerline, and it decides whether hands fit comfortably under the water. Both numbers must reference finished surfaces, meaning after tiling and with the actual basin and counter heights, not the substrate.
For project work, resolve this once per room type on a drawing and hold it. A single wrong rough-in repeated across forty rooms is one of the more expensive coordination failures available in a bathroom package.

Note the hotel case, which surprises people. Wall-mounted faucets look better in a hotel bathroom, but a maintenance team that cannot service a cartridge without opening a wall will not thank the specifier. If wall-mounted is chosen for a managed property, design the access panel in from the start.
