One Plane or Four

A point drain sits in the middle of the shower area, and every part of the floor must slope toward it. In tiling terms that means four triangular planes meeting at diagonal ridges, and each tile crossing a ridge has to be cut or bent to follow it.

A linear drain sits along one edge, usually at a wall or across the shower entry. The whole floor then falls as a single flat plane in one direction, exactly like a ramp. There are no ridges and no compound cuts.

That difference used to be a minor preference. It became a significant one when large format tiles became standard, because a large rigid tile simply cannot follow a compound fall.

Why the Geometry Decides the Tiles

A tile is a rigid plane. A four-way fall requires the floor surface to change direction along the diagonals, so a tile spanning a ridge must either be cut along it or be small enough to follow the change in short steps.

This is why traditional point-drain showers were tiled in mosaics. Small tiles absorb the change in plane through the grout lines. With a 600 mm tile, that is not available, and the result is either lippage at the ridge, a tile that rocks, or a series of awkward cuts.

A linear drain removes the problem entirely. The floor is a single plane, so a large tile lies flat on it exactly as it would on a level floor, just tilted. This is the reason linear drains have become the default in contemporary bathrooms rather than a matter of style.

Flow Rate and Position

A rain head and a hand shower running together can produce far more water than a single conventional shower, and if the drain cannot take it the shower floods, particularly in a wet room where there is no tray upstand to buy time.

Linear drains generally offer higher flow rates for their footprint, because the inlet is a long slot rather than a small grate. That said, capacity varies widely by model and the figure should be checked against the total output of the shower outlets specified rather than assumed.

Position matters as much as capacity. A linear drain at the entry catches water before it can leave the shower area, which is valuable in a wet room with no screen. A linear drain at the far wall keeps the visible slot away from the entry and reads cleaner. Both are common; the choice should be deliberate.

Both types need the trap cleared of hair and residue, and both are usually designed with a removable grate or insert for that purpose. The practical differences are modest but real.

A point drain has a small removable grate and a compact trap, which is quick to lift and rinse. A linear drain has a longer channel, so there is more surface to wipe, but the channel itself is easy to reach along its length and most designs lift out as a single piece.

Tile-in or concealed covers, which take a tile insert so the drain nearly disappears, look excellent and are slightly more work to clean because the insert is heavier and the channel below is deeper. For a hotel, the simpler removable grate usually wins on housekeeping grounds.
