Mirror Cabinet vs Bathroom Mirror

A mirror cabinet trades room depth for storage. In a bathroom where the vanity already provides enough storage, that trade is a bad one: the cabinet projects into the space directly above where people lean over the basin. A recessed cabinet solves it completely by sitting inside the wall, with only the door face proud of the tiling. The requirement is a stud void deep enough and free of services, which in practice means deciding at construction stage rather than at fit-out.

There is a middle option worth knowing: a semi-recessed cabinet, partly in the wall and partly proud, which suits walls with a shallow void. And in new construction, a full-height storage niche beside the mirror often provides more useful storage than a cabinet, with no projection at all.

Is It Storage You Actually Need

A mirror cabinet holds small items at eye level, which is genuinely the right place for the things used daily at the basin. That is its real argument, more than raw capacity.

But it competes with the vanity below it. A vanity with well-designed drawers, particularly a U-shaped top drawer that works around the plumbing, already puts small items within reach and presents them better than a cabinet shelf does. Where that exists, a mirror cabinet often ends up holding things nobody uses.

The clearest case for a cabinet is a bathroom with a pedestal basin, a small wall-hung unit, or a vessel basin on a shallow shelf, where there is no useful storage below at all. The clearest case against it is a bathroom with a full drawer vanity, where the depth costs more than the shelves return.

Lighting, Demisting and Power

Both options increasingly come lit, and the lighting is a stronger reason to choose one than the storage is.

Lighting integrated around a mirror or cabinet door perimeter provides light from the sides at face height, which is what actually illuminates a face properly. A single fitting above the mirror lights the top of the head and shadows the eyes and chin. If the mirror carries its own perimeter lighting, that problem is solved without separate sconces.

Demister pads, a heated element behind the glass, keep a patch clear during a shower. They are inexpensive and genuinely useful in a bathroom with modest ventilation.

Both need power, and that cable has to be in the wall before tiling, at a height derived from the mirror position, which is derived from the counter height. This is the coordination point that gets missed, and it cannot be fixed afterward without surface trunking.
