The U-shaped drawer is the most effective and the most common in good bathroom cabinetry. The box is built around the trap so that the drawer still opens fully, and the lost volume is only the trap itself rather than the whole drawer.

A cupboard with a shelf looks like it holds more, because the volume is unbroken. In use it holds much less, because you can only reach what is at the front, and everything behind it becomes archaeology.
