The Cabinet: Construction Over Material

Material choice matters less to cost than construction does. The gap between plywood and MDF is modest. The gap between a stapled butt-jointed carcass and a frame-and-panel cabinet with proper joinery is large, because the second is largely machining time and machining time is the most expensive thing in a furniture factory.
This is why "solid wood" is such an unreliable price signal. A solid wood cabinet assembled with pocket screws can cost less than a well-built plywood one with jointed frames. When a quotation is unexpectedly low, the construction is usually where the difference is, not the material.
Drawer boxes are the other place cost hides. A dovetailed or doweled solid drawer box with full-extension runners is meaningfully more expensive than a stapled box on partial-extension runners, and it is the part of the cabinet a user touches most often.

Finish: The Invisible Cost

Finishing is the least visible major cost and the most commonly reduced. The variables are preparation time, the number of coats, whether the panel is abraded between coats, whether hidden faces are sealed, and how long the cabinet is allowed to cure before packing.
Every one of those can be cut without changing how the cabinet looks on the day it is unpacked. All of them change how it looks in year three, and the sealing of hidden faces changes whether it survives at all.
For a buyer, the practical approach is to ask for the coat count and the sealing scope in writing, and treat a quotation that will not state them as incomplete rather than cheap.

The Top and Basin

On many vanities this is the single largest line, and it is where specification changes move price most sharply.
The main drivers are the material, whether the basin is integrated or separate, how much machining the top requires, and the length. An integrated solid surface basin costs more than a drop-in ceramic bowl in a laminate top by a wide margin, and delivers a jointless surface that a hotel will value and a budget rental will not.
Length is worth understanding because it is not linear. A top within a standard sheet size is efficient; one that exceeds it requires either a joint or a larger sheet with significant waste, and the price steps rather than climbing smoothly. If a design is close to that boundary, asking where the step falls can save real money for a few millimeters.

Packing and Freight

For an importer these two lines are often the difference between a workable price and an unworkable one, and they are the most overlooked.
Sea freight is charged by volume. A carton design that reduces packed volume reduces the landed cost of every unit in the container, and the savings can be substantial across a full load. Nesting, shipping tops separately, and knock-down construction are all levers, and each has a tradeoff in site labor.
The tradeoff runs the other way too. Reducing packing material to save volume increases damage, and a damaged unit costs far more than the packing saved, because it includes the replacement, the freight, and the delay. The right answer is a packing design tested against actual handling, not the minimum that fits.
