How Deep Is Deep Enough

Depth is quoted inconsistently, which is how ordinary baths end up labeled as soaking tubs. Overall depth from rim to base is the largest figure and tells you little. Depth to overflow is what you can actually fill to, and it is the number to compare.

If a supplier quotes only overall depth, ask specifically for depth to overflow. The gap between the two is often 60 to 100 mm, which is exactly the range that decides whether a bath soaks or not.
The Forms It Comes In

A soaking tub is a proportion rather than a fixed shape, so it exists in all the usual installation types.
Freestanding versions are the most common and the most photographed, and they show the depth clearly. Built-in and drop-in versions set the tub into a deck or an alcove, which reduces the step-in height considerably by giving a surface to sit on before swinging the legs over. For older users and for accessible design, that difference matters more than any other.
Materials vary widely. Cast iron and copper versions exist and are heavy. Acrylic versions are common and cool quickly, which somewhat defeats the purpose of a long soak. Cast solid surface is the mainstream premium answer because it has the thermal mass to hold heat through a long bath and can be cast to any depth and profile.

How to Judge One Before Buying

Since the term is unregulated, the product has to be judged on numbers and geometry rather than on the label.
Ask for depth to overflow, not overall depth. Ask whether there is an integral seat and at what height, because a seat is what makes a deep tub comfortable rather than merely deep. Ask for the internal length at the seat, since that is what determines legroom, not the external length.
Then check the two practical constraints: step-in height, especially for a freestanding model, and filled weight against the floor construction. A soaking tub concentrates a comparable volume of water into a smaller footprint, so the load per square meter is higher than for a standard bath even though the tub looks smaller.
