The Basin Decides the Mounting

Start here, because it eliminates whole categories quickly.
A basin with one tap hole takes a monobloc mixer. A top drilled for three holes at a stated center distance takes a widespread set and nothing else. A vessel basin sitting proud of the counter needs a tall deck tap or a wall-mounted one. A basin with no tap hole at all requires wall-mounted or floor-standing.
If the countertop is already drilled, the hole configuration is the constraint and there is no negotiating with it. If nothing is drilled yet, this is the moment to decide, because both the count and the center distance are machined at fabrication.
And if wall-mounting is wanted, it must be decided before the wall is closed. That is the one option with a deadline earlier than the purchase.

Where the Water Lands

This is the failure that gets noticed daily and is almost never checked at selection.
Spout reach must place the stream over the drain, not near it. Too short and water runs down the back wall of the bowl, which looks wrong and splashes. Too long and it lands on the front slope or beyond the bowl entirely. Derive it from the basin's own geometry: the distance from the tap hole or wall face to the drain center.
Height is the second half of the same question. There must be enough clearance between spout and basin rim to get hands under comfortably, which is exactly what fails when a standard tap is fitted to a vessel basin.
For a wall-mounted tap both numbers become rough-in dimensions fixed before tiling, which is why they belong on a drawing rather than in a conversation.

Valve, Cartridge and Flow

A ceramic disc cartridge is the modern standard and gives a quarter-turn action with a long life. What matters commercially is not the cartridge type but whether replacements will be available in five years, because the cartridge is the wearing part and its availability decides whether a tap is repairable or disposable.
For projects, ask this explicitly. A building with a hundred taps whose cartridges are discontinued has a hundred future replacements rather than a hundred future repairs.
Flow rate matters in two directions. Several markets regulate maximum flow, so the specification has to comply. And a fitting designed for mains pressure may perform poorly on a gravity-fed low-pressure supply, which is a common problem in renovations of older buildings. Check the working pressure range against the actual supply rather than assuming.

Substrate and Finish, Last

By this point the field is narrow, and the remaining choice is the one that decides how the tap looks after three years of daily use and cleaning.
Two questions, and the color name answers neither. What is the body made of, brass or zinc alloy? And what is the finish process, electroplated, PVD, or a sprayed coating?
Chrome and brushed platings are the durable defaults for good reason. Matte black and colored finishes vary enormously: a PVD finish on a brass body will outlast the bathroom, while a sprayed coating on zinc alloy will wear through at the lever tip and the spout edge within a couple of years. They are indistinguishable when new, which is precisely the problem.
Where a figure is available, salt spray hours give a comparable number. And where several fittings must match, approve physical samples side by side, because finish names are not standardized between suppliers.
