Start With What Cannot Move

Two things govern before any product is considered: the space you must keep clear, and where the plumbing is.
Mark the clear floor you intend to keep. At least 21 inches in front is a common minimum and 30 is comfortable, and any drawer needs its own full depth clear as well. Then record the waste and supply positions as horizontal and vertical distances from a fixed corner. Those numbers decide the drawer layout more than any catalog choice will.
Also settle whether the plumbing can move, and at whose cost. That single answer often decides the entire specification.

Wall-Mounted or Floor-Standing

This is the second decision because it changes what sizes and heights are available, and because it depends on the wall rather than on preference.
A wall-mounted vanity makes the floor continuous, which makes a small bathroom look larger and much easier to clean. It sets its own height, which is useful. But it needs a wall that can carry the loaded cabinet, and in stud construction that means noggins or a backing plate installed before the wall is closed.
A floor-standing vanity carries its load to the floor, so wall construction stops mattering. It brings a fixed height with it, it hides services more easily behind a plinth, and it needs a reasonably level floor.

Material and Construction

Choose by how the room is used and what finish is wanted, not by which word sounds most premium.
If the finish is painted, MDF gives the flattest result and is the correct choice, provided every edge and cut-out is sealed. If timber grain is wanted and the cabinet should last decades, solid wood in a frame-and-panel construction is the answer, because it can be refinished many times. If dimensional stability in a humid room matters most, plywood is the most stable of the three.
In practice, the best cabinets mix them deliberately: a stable plywood carcass, solid wood frames and doors, and MDF where a sprayed finish is the point.

Basin and Tap, Decided Together

The basin decision constrains the cabinet height, the countertop machining and the tap, so it belongs here rather than at the end.
An integrated basin removes the joint entirely, which is why projects specify it. An undermount gives a clean top surface at lower cost with the top material carrying the fixing. A drop-in is the cheapest and easiest to replace. A vessel is the most visible and raises the working height by 4 to 6 inches, so the cabinet must come down to compensate.
Whichever is chosen, the tap follows immediately: hole count, hole spacing, tap height and whether it is deck or wall mounted. All of those are drilled or roughed in before anything ships.

- Vessel: highest impact, lower the cabinet to compensate
- Fix tap holes and waste type in the same decision
Finish and Hardware, Last

By this point the field is narrow and the remaining choices are inexpensive to change, which is exactly why they come last.
Two practical notes. Lower sheen finishes hide substrate imperfections and later scratches, and in a bathroom cleaned frequently they keep a better appearance than gloss. And hardware finish is where a bathroom visibly ages: a poorly plated handle or hinge in a wet room shows within a couple of years, regardless of the cabinet quality behind it.
For project work, ask about spares at this stage too. A handle range that is discontinued in three years is a problem for a building with eighty bathrooms.
