How to Choose a Vanity Top

A vanity top is machined before it ships and cannot be altered afterward. Every hole, cut-out, edge profile and upstand is fixed at fabrication, which makes it the component where late changes cost the most. Getting it right means deciding six things in the right order, and four of them are not about the material at all.

Six Decisions, Four of Them Not About Material

Countertop selection is usually presented as a material choice, which is why so many tops arrive correct in material and wrong in every other respect.

The basin arrangement constrains the material. The tap holes are machined and permanent. The edge profile and thickness set the appearance more than the color does. The wall junction determines whether water gets behind the top. And on a long run, where the joints fall is a decision someone will make, with or without your input.

The Basin Arrangement Comes First

This decision constrains the material, so making it second is what causes rework.

If you want an integrated basin with no joint at all, the material must be one that can be formed and bonded invisibly, which in practice means solid surface. If you want an undermount, the material must be able to carry the fixing and take a machined and polished opening edge, which stone and quartz do well. A drop-in or vessel is possible in any material, because the top only needs a hole.

Bowl position on the top matters as much as bowl type. Center it on the cabinet, not on the room, unless you have deliberately decided otherwise, and check that the waste position lines up with the drainage rather than assuming.

Tap Holes Are Permanent

Three variables have to be right before machining: how many holes, how far apart, and how far back from the front edge.

A single-hole monobloc tap, a three-hole set with separate handles, and a widespread set with a specific center distance are all different machining instructions. A wall-mounted tap means no holes at all in the top, and a rough-in position in the wall that has to be fixed before tiling.

The distance back from the front edge decides whether water lands in the bowl or on the rim. It is derived from the tap's spout reach and the bowl geometry together, and it is worth having stated on the drawing rather than left to a standard dimension.

Edge, Thickness and the Wall Junction

Apparent thickness is a design decision independent of the actual material thickness. A slim 12 mm edge reads as contemporary; a built-up 40 mm edge reads as substantial. In solid surface, either can be produced from the same sheet by building up the edge, so the look does not have to cost extra material.

The edge profile itself is a small detail with a large effect: a square arris is sharp and modern, a slight radius is more forgiving in use, and a bullnose reads traditional. In a family bathroom, a small radius is worth having.

The wall junction is the functional decision. A separate splashback leaves a sealant line that will eventually discolor. An upstand formed as part of the top removes that line. A coved upstand, curved into the surface, removes the internal corner as well, which is why it is specified for hospitality and healthcare.

Long Runs and Joint Positions

Any top longer than a single slab has to be joined, and where those joints fall is a decision. Left unstated, it will be made by whoever nests the parts most efficiently.

In stone and quartz the joint will be visible, so it should be placed where it is least conspicuous and away from a bowl, where it would sit in standing water. In solid surface the joint can be bonded and sanded so it disappears entirely, which is why continuous runs of several meters are routinely produced without a visible break.

For repeat rooms, there is a further advantage in specifying a made-to-length top: it eliminates the filler pieces and scribes that otherwise appear at each end, and with them the gaps that collect water.

What should I decide first when choosing a vanity top?

The basin arrangement, because it constrains which materials are possible. An integrated basin with no joint requires a formable and invisibly bondable material; an undermount requires a machined and polished opening edge.

Can tap holes be drilled later?

In principle for some materials, but it should be avoided. Holes are machined at fabrication under controlled conditions, and site drilling risks chipping and, in some materials, cracking. Confirm the tap specification before the top is made.

How thick should a vanity top be?

Apparent thickness is a design choice rather than a structural one. Slim edges around 12 mm read contemporary; built-up edges of 30 to 40 mm read substantial. In solid surface both can be produced from the same sheet.

Do I need an upstand or a splashback?

One or the other, and a formed upstand is better than a separate splashback because it removes the sealant line where the top meets the wall. A coved upstand also removes the internal corner, which is why hospitality projects specify it.

Can a vanity top be made in one piece for a long run?

In solid surface, effectively yes: joints are bonded and sanded so they disappear, so runs of several meters read as continuous. In stone and quartz the joint remains visible, so its position should be planned deliberately.

What causes water damage behind a vanity top?

Almost always the wall junction. A sealant line between a separate splashback and the top will eventually fail or discolor. Forming the upstand as part of the top removes that failure point entirely.
