The Habit That Does Most of the Work

Neither deposit forms on glass that is dry. Both form when water sits on the surface and evaporates, leaving whatever was dissolved in it behind.
A squeegee used for thirty seconds after each shower removes almost all of the water and therefore almost all of the future deposit. It is unglamorous, and it outperforms every product on the market by a wide margin. The second-best habit is ventilation, which shortens the drying time for whatever the squeegee misses.
For a rental or a hotel this is not enforceable, which is why those settings need either treated glass or a cleaning schedule. But for anyone specifying a shower for their own use, mentioning the squeegee is more useful advice than recommending a cleaner.

Cleaning Routine and the Parts People Skip

For a weekly clean, a mild detergent solution and a soft cloth or non-scratch pad handle soap film. For scale, a mild acidic cleaner, or dilute white vinegar, left to dwell for a few minutes before wiping, works well. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
The parts that get skipped are the parts that fail. The bottom track of a sliding enclosure collects everything that runs down the glass, and once that residue hardens it makes the door drag and eventually damages the rollers. It needs cleaning out, not just wiping over.
Seals are the other one. Magnetic strips and drip seals collect residue at their edges and eventually harden, which is when they stop sealing and the enclosure starts leaking. They are cheap and replaceable; cleaning them extends their life considerably.

What Causes Permanent Damage

Three mistakes account for most permanent damage to shower enclosures, and all three are avoidable.
Abrasives on glass leave fine scratches that catch light and cannot be polished out. This includes scouring pads, cream cleaners and, notably, blades used to scrape off hardened scale. It also includes abrasives used on hardware, which remove the plating and expose the base metal underneath.
Strong acids used aggressively, particularly on glass that already has some etching, accelerate the damage. Dilute and dwell rather than concentrate and scrub.
And leaving scale in place for years is itself damage rather than neglect: at some point the deposit stops being removable and starts being etched into the surface. At that point the only remedies are professional restoration or replacement of the panel.

A note on easy-clean coatings, which are widely offered. They work by making the surface hydrophobic so water beads and carries deposits away, and they are genuinely effective while intact. They are not permanent, and abrasive cleaning removes them quickly, which is the most common reason people conclude they do not work.
