Tempered Glass in Shower Enclosures

Every shower enclosure in general production uses tempered glass, and most buyers never ask why or what separates one panel from another. The answer matters more than it sounds: tempering is what makes the glass safe, it is also what makes it impossible to modify after the fact, and a small number of tempered panels fail years later for reasons that have nothing to do with impact.

Why Shower Glass Is Tempered

Annealed glass, the ordinary kind, breaks into large pointed shards. In a bathroom, where people are wet, unclothed and often unsteady, that failure mode is unacceptable, which is why safety glass is required for shower enclosures in essentially every market.

Tempering solves it by changing how the glass fails. The panel is heated close to its softening point and then cooled rapidly at the surfaces. The outside solidifies first and the interior contracts afterward, leaving the surfaces in permanent compression and the core in tension. That locked-in stress makes the glass several times stronger in bending, and when it does finally break, the stored energy shatters the whole panel into small blunt fragments at once.

What Tempering Does and Does Not Do

Tempering increases bending strength substantially. It does not increase scratch resistance at all: tempered glass scratches exactly as easily as annealed glass of the same composition, which is why abrasive cleaning damages shower panels regardless of grade.

It also does nothing about edge damage. A chipped edge on a tempered panel is a serious defect, because the compression layer is interrupted at that point and the panel is far more likely to fail there. This is why polished edges are specified, why panels should never be stood on a hard floor unprotected, and why site handling matters so much.

Nothing Can Be Changed Afterward

Every hole, notch, cut-out and edge profile must be produced before the glass enters the furnace. Once tempered, any attempt to cut or drill releases the locked-in stress and the panel disintegrates.

The practical consequences run through the whole project. Measurements must be taken from the finished opening, after tiling. Hinge and handle positions must be confirmed on a drawing before production. A panel that arrives with a hole in the wrong place is scrap, not an adjustment, and a replacement means the full production and shipping cycle again.

This is the single strongest argument for framed or semi-frameless enclosures in renovation work, where the opening cannot be guaranteed.

Spontaneous Breakage, Explained

Occasionally a tempered panel breaks with no impact at all, sometimes years after installation. It is rare, it is well understood, and it is not a mystery or a manufacturing myth.

The usual cause is a microscopic nickel sulfide inclusion trapped in the glass during manufacture. Over time and with temperature change, the inclusion changes phase and expands slightly. If it sits in the tension zone at the core of a tempered panel, that tiny expansion is enough to release the stored stress and the panel shatters.

The mitigation is heat soak testing: after tempering, panels are held at elevated temperature for a period, which causes panels containing unstable inclusions to fail in the factory rather than in a bathroom. It does not eliminate the risk entirely, but it removes the large majority of it. For hotels, apartments and any installation over a bath, it is worth specifying explicitly.
