Shower enclosure quotations use a vocabulary that mixes glazing, joinery and plumbing. A buyer comparing two quotations without it can easily compare a bypass door against a pivot door and conclude one supplier is cheaper. This glossary covers the terms that actually appear on drawings and quotations.

Four Groups of Words

Enclosure vocabulary divides naturally into how the enclosure is arranged, what the glass is, what the moving parts are, and how it meets the building. Quotations mix all four, which is why they are hard to compare.

Start by matching the configuration between quotations. Until that matches, nothing else is comparable.

Configuration Terms

These describe the arrangement, and they are the terms most often mismatched between quotations.

Glass Terms

These describe the panel and how it was made.

ArrisThe small bevel taken off a glass edge
Cut-outA machined opening or notch, made before tempering

Hardware Terms

These describe the moving parts, which is where enclosures age.

Bottom trackA channel the door runs in; collects residue and needs cleaning

Stabiliser barA bar bracing a tall panel back to a wall or ceiling
Magnetic stripA seal in the door edge that closes against the frame or panel
Drip stripA seal at the bottom of a door directing water inward
Wall profileAn adjustable channel absorbing out-of-plumb walls

Installation Terms

These describe how the enclosure meets the building, and they are the terms that matter on a survey.

Out of plumbA wall leaning from vertical; recorded as a deviation over the glass height
Tray upstandA raised lip on a shower tray that the enclosure sits on or behind
Level accessA shower with no step, level with the bathroom floor
TankingThe waterproof membrane behind tiling in a wet area
FallThe slope of a floor or tray toward the drain
Silicone jointThe sealed junction between glass, profile and the building
Dry glazingAn assembly relying on gaskets rather than sealant at a joint

Two of these decide most disputes. Opening size, because it must be the finished dimension rather than the substrate. And adjustment, because it is the number that tells you whether a configuration can cope with the walls you actually have.

Terminology Questions

What is a bypass shower door?

Two or more sliding panels that pass each other on parallel tracks. It needs no external swing space, and the clear opening is a little under half the total enclosure width in a two-panel arrangement.

What is a quadrant enclosure?

A curved corner enclosure, usually with sliding doors following the curve. It suits compact bathrooms because it takes a corner rather than a wall, and the curve keeps the projection into the room modest.

What is a return panel?

A short panel set at right angles to a walk-in screen, used to control spray where a single screen is not enough. It is a common addition where the shower area is shorter than ideal.

What does heat soak tested mean?

A process applied after tempering in which panels are held at elevated temperature so that any containing unstable inclusions fail in the factory rather than in service. It removes most of the spontaneous breakage risk.

What is a stabiliser bar for?

Bracing a tall glass panel back to a wall or ceiling so it does not flex. It is common on frameless walk-in screens, where the panel is otherwise supported only at the base.

What is the difference between opening size and adjustment?

Opening size is the finished dimension the enclosure must fit, measured after tiling. Adjustment is how much wall variation the configuration can absorb, typically through a wall profile. Frameless configurations have very little.

Match the Configuration First

Two shower quotations are not comparable until the configuration matches. A bypass sliding enclosure and a hinged door enclosure of the same width are different products with different opening widths, different hardware and different tolerance requirements.

Once configurations match, compare glass thickness and edge treatment, hardware type, and the adjustment available. Those are the terms that decide both the fit on installation day and how the enclosure behaves in year five.
