Hinged and Pivot Doors

A hinged door gives the largest possible opening for a given enclosure width, which matters for accessibility, for cleaning the shower, and for anyone who finds a narrow gap awkward. It is also the simplest mechanically: two hinges, no track, no rollers, and nothing to wear out.
The cost is the arc. The door must swing outward, so nothing can occupy that space, including the bathroom door itself. Hinged shower doors that open inward are avoided because water runs off the inside of the door onto the floor when it is opened.
A pivot door reduces the problem without eliminating it. Because the pivot is set in from the edge, part of the door swings inward and part outward, so the external arc is smaller. It gives most of the opening width of a hinged door in less space, at the cost of a slightly more complex fitting and a small internal swing.

Sliding and Bypass Doors

A sliding door moves along a track, so it needs no space outside the shower at all. In a compact bathroom this is often the only workable answer, and it is why sliding enclosures dominate apartment and hotel specification.
The tradeoff is the opening. In a two-panel bypass configuration, one panel slides behind the other, so the clear opening is a little under half the total width. On a 1200 mm enclosure that is roughly 550 mm, which is fine for most adults and tight for anyone carrying a child or using a mobility aid.
Three-panel configurations recover some of the width on wider openings. And a sliding door has a track at the bottom or a suspended top rail, both of which need cleaning: the bottom track in particular collects residue and is the part users complain about.

Bi-Fold Doors and Walk-In Screens

A bi-fold door hinges in the middle and folds outward, so its external arc is roughly half the depth of a full hinged door. It is a genuine solution for a narrow bathroom that still wants a wide-ish opening, and it is common in compact European and Asian bathrooms.
Its weakness is hardware count. A bi-fold has more hinges, more moving parts and more alignment to hold than any other configuration, and in a hard-water area those parts are the first to complain.
The walk-in screen removes the entire problem by removing the door. There is no swing, no track, no seal to perish and no alignment to hold. In exchange it requires a longer shower area so that spray does not escape past the screen, and a floor that falls correctly toward the drain. Where those two things can be provided, it is the lowest-maintenance configuration available.

The Hardware Is What You Are Buying

Glass is glass. Two enclosures with the same 8 mm toughened panels can behave completely differently after three years, and the difference is entirely in the hardware.
For sliding doors the critical components are the rollers and the track. Sealed bearing rollers running on a machined track stay smooth; open rollers on a rolled section collect residue and start to drag. For hinged and pivot doors it is the hinge mechanism and the plating. For bi-folds it is the alignment of multiple pivots under repeated use.
These are the questions worth asking, and they are far more predictive of satisfaction than glass thickness.
