Heat Retention and Surface Feel

Both materials have real thermal mass, and both will hold a bath comfortably warm far longer than a thin acrylic shell. Cast iron has the edge on paper because iron is denser, but the difference in a real bath is small once both have absorbed their initial heat from the water.
The initial absorption is where they differ noticeably. Cast iron feels cold to first touch and takes more heat out of the water at the start. Solid surface is warmer to the touch immediately, which many people notice more than the long-run retention figure.

Weight, and the Question It Raises

This is the practical decider more often than anything about the surface. A freestanding cast iron bath commonly weighs 300 to 500 pounds empty. Add roughly 40 gallons of water at 8.3 pounds per gallon and a bather, and the loaded weight can approach 1,000 pounds concentrated in a small footprint.
On a ground-floor slab this is a non-issue. On a timber upper floor it is a structural question that has to be answered before ordering, not after delivery. It also affects everything upstream: two or three people to carry it, whether it fits up the stairs at all, and freight cost per unit.
A comparable solid surface bath is typically 100 to 180 pounds empty. It can usually be carried by two people, it does not normally require structural review, and it costs meaningfully less to ship, which matters at project quantities.

- Ask for filled weight, not empty weight, when checking structure
What Happens When It Gets Damaged

Vitreous enamel is a glass layer fused to iron. It is very hard and very resistant to scratching, which is a genuine advantage in daily use. But when something heavy is dropped into the bath, the enamel chips, and a chip exposes the iron beneath. Repairs are cosmetic fills; the original surface cannot be restored, and re-enameling means removing the bath.
Solid surface behaves the opposite way. It is softer, so it will scuff and can be scratched by abrasive cleaning. But the color and material run all the way through, so a scratch, a stain or a light burn is sanded out and polished back. A maintenance team can do this in place with abrasive pads.
For a hotel or a rental, that distinction usually settles the argument. Damage is not a possibility, it is a schedule, and a surface that recovers is worth more than a surface that resists.
