What Is a Wet Room?

A wet room is a bathroom where the entire floor is waterproofed and falls to a drain, so the shower needs no tray and no threshold. It is not simply a shower without a door. It is a different waterproofing strategy, and the parts of it that matter are all underneath the tiling where nobody can inspect them afterwards.

Waterproof the Room, Not the Shower

In a conventional bathroom, water is contained: a tray catches it, an enclosure keeps it in, and the rest of the room is treated as somewhere that occasionally gets splashed.

A wet room abandons containment. A waterproof membrane, called tanking, is applied across the whole floor and up the walls to a defined height, before tiling. The floor is built with a fall toward a drain, so wherever water lands it runs to the outlet. The tiles are a finish over the waterproofing rather than the waterproofing itself.

The visible result is a bathroom with no step, no tray, and often no door on the shower. The invisible result is that the membrane and its junctions are now the only thing between the shower and the structure below.

How a Wet Room Is Built

Three elements have to work together, and the order they are built in is fixed.

The substrate is prepared and shaped so the floor falls toward the drain. A linear drain allows a single-plane fall, which is far easier to build and to tile than the four-way fall a central point drain requires. This is why linear drains have become standard in wet rooms.

The tanking membrane is then applied continuously across that shaped floor and up the walls, sealed around the drain flange and around every pipe penetration. Corners and floor-to-wall junctions are the critical details and are usually reinforced.

Only then is it tiled. Because the fall is built into the substrate rather than into the tile bed, the tiling can be a consistent thickness, which is what allows large format tiles to work at all.

Where Wet Rooms Go Wrong

Wet rooms do not fail randomly. They fail at a small number of predictable points, all of which are workmanship rather than product.

Pipe penetrations, where the membrane has to seal around something passing through it. The drain flange, where the membrane meets the manufactured outlet. Floor-to-wall junctions, where two planes meet and the membrane must turn. And the fall itself, if it runs the wrong way or is too shallow to move water.

What makes these expensive is not their likelihood but their discovery time. A failed junction leaks slowly into the structure and is usually discovered as a stain on a ceiling below, months later, by which point the repair means removing the finishes.

The single most common design-level error is a floor that falls toward the door. No drain corrects that, and it will be reported as a leaking shower rather than as a floor built the wrong way.

What to Confirm Before Specifying One

A wet room is a good answer for the right room and an expensive one for the wrong room. These are the questions that separate them.

Is level access actually required? If it is, for an accessible bathroom or ageing-in-place design, a wet room is usually the right answer and the extra care is justified. Confirm the dimensional requirements against the applicable accessibility standard, since clear floor space and rail positions usually drive the layout.

What is below? Over an occupied space, particularly a timber floor, the consequence of a slow failure is much higher than over a slab.

Who is building it? Wet room performance is almost entirely a workmanship question, and it is worth asking directly whether the trades have done one before.

And is a screen wanted? Almost always yes. A fixed screen keeps spray off the rest of the room without introducing a threshold, and a return panel handles the remainder where the wet area is short.
