How an Integrated Basin Is Made

There are two routes, and both are used in solid surface production.
The bowl can be cast as part of the top in a single mold, which suits standard sizes made repeatedly. Or the bowl can be formed separately and then chemically bonded to the top, with the joint sanded and polished until it disappears entirely. The second route is what allows any length of top with the bowl at any position, which is why made-to-size project work uses it.
The reason it works at all is a property specific to solid surface: the material can be bonded with an adhesive of the same composition, so the joint is the same material as the parts. Sanding across it leaves nothing to see. Stone and quartz cannot do this, which is why they cannot offer a genuinely integrated basin.

Why Projects Specify It

Three reasons, in order of how often they are decisive.
Maintenance. In a bathroom used hard and cleaned daily, the joint between bowl and top is the first thing to discolor and eventually to fail. Removing it removes a recurring maintenance item across every room in a building.
Hygiene. There is no crevice at the bowl edge, which matters in healthcare settings and increasingly in hospitality. A coved upstand at the wall extends the same logic to the back edge, giving a surface with no internal corner at all.
Continuity. A single top can run wall to wall across multiple cabinets with invisible joints, which reads as a considered piece of architecture rather than a row of separate units. For a long hotel vanity or a communal washroom this is both the practical and the visual answer.

What to Confirm Before Ordering

Because an integrated top is made to a specific configuration, more is fixed at production than with modular components. Five things should be on an approved drawing.
Overall length and depth, including whether the top runs wall to wall and how much tolerance is allowed at each end. Bowl position and bowl size, set against the cabinet rather than the room. Tap hole count, spacing and setback from the front edge, derived from the actual tap. The waste position, confirmed against the drainage. And the upstand detail at the wall, including whether it is coved.
The tradeoff of a one-piece construction is that the bowl cannot be changed independently later. In practice this matters less than it sounds, because solid surface is repairable in place, so the usual reasons for replacing a bowl do not apply.
