Drawing length conversion

Drawing Inches and Millimeters Converter

Enter an actual length, not a nominal pipe or thread designation. Compare the direct conversion with the nearest selected inch fraction and its signed change in millimeters.

Enter measurements → review geometry or arithmetic → confirm the real application. No order or approval is generated.

Enter your records

Required inputs must be complete. Only fields marked optional may be left blank. Enter 0 only when zero is deliberate; missing values remain unresolved. Use non-confidential references only.

Record fields

  • Feature reference
  • Input notation
  • Length (for example 1.375 or 1 3/8)
  • Round inches to nearest fraction

Worked example

A buyer converts three lengths from a vanity drawing into inches and millimeters and sees how far a rounded fraction moves each length.

Example figures are invented for illustration. They are not product data, prices or a quotation.

LOCAL WORKSHEET — entered data only

Vanity body width: 762 mm = 30 in; rounded 30 in; change 0 mm.

Drawer front height: 136.525 mm = 5.375 in; rounded 5 3/8 in; change 0 mm.

Mounting rail setback: 34.925 mm = 1.375 in; rounded 1 1/2 in; change 3.175 mm.

No product, inspection, installation, stock or delivery approval is generated.

How to read it

The 762 mm width converts to exactly 30 in and the 5 3/8 in drawer height to 136.525 mm, so both round with a change of 0 mm. The 1.375 in setback is 34.925 mm; rounding to the nearest 1/4 in gives 1 1/2 in, a change of 3.175 mm, so the buyer should confirm that shift against the drawing before using the rounded value.

Use the exact unit relation

NIST gives one inch as exactly 25.4 millimeters. Divide millimeters by 25.4 or multiply inches by 25.4. The exact definition does not remove the uncertainty in the original measurement. The worksheet displays decimal results rounded to six places.

Fraction notation and rounding

Fractional-inch input accepts a whole number, a fraction such as 3/8, or a mixed number such as 1 3/8. The fractional part of a mixed number must be less than one. Values must be nonnegative, and a denominator cannot be zero. Rounding chooses the nearest multiple of the selected fraction; an exact half step rounds upward. The signed change is rounded length minus the entered length, expressed in millimeters.

Do not convert a nominal designation as physical size

NPT, BSP and other nominal pipe or thread names are not literal length inputs. This tool does not choose drawing tolerances, approve a rounded dimension or modify an engineering drawing. Keep the original value and obtain approval before using a rounded substitute.

Numerical scope

Numeric inputs accept at most six decimal places and magnitude 1,000,000. Geometry contact and grid counts use exact scaled-integer comparisons within that input scope, not an added physical clearance. Displayed decimal results are rounded to six places and do not establish measurement accuracy.

Drawing length conversion questions

Is the inch-to-millimeter relation approximate?

No. One inch is exactly 25.4 millimeters.

What does a positive rounding change mean?

The rounded inch fraction is longer than the entered length.

Can I enter 1 3/8 as a mixed fraction?

Yes, under Fractional inches.

Can a nominal half-inch pipe be treated as a measured half-inch diameter?

No. Nominal designations are outside this converter.

Does the rounded result become an approved drawing dimension?

No. Any substitution needs the responsible drawing review.
