Ideal door sweep

Quarter-Turn Door Swing Geometry Checker

Use a plan view with the hinge at (0, 0), x to the right and y upward. Enter obstacle rectangles in that same millimeter coordinate system. This checks only an ideal quarter-circle swept by a zero-thickness leaf.

Enter measurements → review geometry or arithmetic → confirm the real application. No order or approval is generated.

Enter your records

Required inputs must be complete. Only fields marked optional may be left blank. Enter 0 only when zero is deliberate; missing values remain unresolved. Use non-confidential references only.

Record fields

  • Hinge-to-leaf-edge radius (mm)
  • Closed leaf points
  • Opening rotation
  • Unique obstacle reference
  • Obstacle left x (mm)

Worked example

A designer checks a 900 mm shower door leaf, hinged at the origin and opening counterclockwise, against three obstacles in the plan.

Example figures are invented for illustration. They are not product data, prices or a quotation.

REVIEW ITEMS

Vanity A: ideal sweep contact; resolve geometry.

No product, inspection, installation, stock or delivery approval is generated.

How to read it

With a 900 mm leaf opening counterclockwise from the right, Vanity A's nearest corner is at (700, 500), a distance of 860.232527 mm, inside the radius, so it is flagged as contact. Bench B is 1044.030651 mm away, and Niche C sits at negative x, outside the opening quadrant. This covers ideal geometry only, not handles or leaf thickness.

Ideal door sweep: coordinate or grid convention; schematic, not to scale.
Original convention diagram, not to scale. It is not an installation or cutting approval.

The sweep is a quarter disk, not just two leaf positions

The leaf sweeps all radial positions from closed to 90 degrees open. An obstacle can intersect the arc between those positions even if neither end position touches it. Rectangles are transformed into the opening quadrant; the nearest point in that quadrant is compared with the radius. Boundary contact counts as contact.

One flat coordinate system

The hinge is fixed at the origin. Closed direction and clockwise or counterclockwise rotation choose the quadrant. Negative obstacle coordinates are allowed; width, height and leaf radius must be positive. Obstacle references must be unique. Rectangles describe plan-view envelopes only, with no vertical separation.

Outside this ideal sweep is not installation approval

Leaf thickness, handles, hinge offsets, seals, flexible components, tolerances and required clearances are excluded. A result outside the sweep only describes this geometry. Obtain the actual hardware and installation review; never use the result as a safety clearance or proof that a real door fits.

Numerical scope

Numeric inputs accept at most six decimal places and magnitude 1,000,000. Geometry contact and grid counts use exact scaled-integer comparisons within that input scope, not an added physical clearance. Displayed decimal results are rounded to six places and do not establish measurement accuracy.

Ideal door sweep questions

Does the tool check only fully closed and fully open positions?

No. It checks the entire ideal quarter-disk sweep.

What happens at exact boundary contact?

Contact is reported, not a clear result.

Can I move the hinge in the input?

No. Translate the drawing so the hinge is at (0, 0).

Are handles and leaf thickness included?

No. They require a separate actual-assembly clearance review.

Does an outside-sweep result mean installation is approved?

No. It establishes only the stated ideal geometry.
