Installation Terms

These describe how the tub meets the room, and they determine most of the construction cost.

| Corner tub | Shaped to fit a corner, usually with two finished sides |
| Back-to-wall | Freestanding in appearance but sited against a wall |
| Access panel | A removable panel giving access to the waste and trap |
Dimension Terms, and Their Traps

This is where most specification errors originate, because the same word describes different measurements.

| Internal length | The usable bathing length inside the tub |
| Overall depth | Rim to the outside of the base; the largest and least useful figure |
| Water depth / depth to overflow | How deep you can actually fill it; the number that matters |
| Internal width at rim | The width across the top of the bathing area |
| Internal width at base | Usually much narrower; determines foot room |
| Filled weight | Tub plus water plus bather; the figure for structural checks |
| Bathing well | The usable internal volume, distinct from the tub's footprint |
Two habits prevent nearly all dimension problems. Always ask for depth to overflow rather than depth. And always check filled weight rather than empty weight when the tub is going anywhere other than a ground floor slab.
Material Terms

Material naming in this category is unusually loose, and several names describe overlapping or identical compositions.

| Cast iron | Iron with a fused vitreous enamel surface |
| Gelcoat | The thin pigmented surface layer on a fiberglass shell |
| Filler percentage | The proportion of mineral in a cast material; higher is denser |
Because the names overlap, the useful questions are compositional rather than nominal: what is the filler, what is the resin, and what is the filler percentage. Two products called stone resin can differ substantially on all three.
Waste, Overflow and Services

These decide where the drainage has to be and how the tub actually fills.

| Tap ledge | A flat rim area drilled for a deck-mounted filler |
| Tap hole drilling | Whether and where the tub is drilled; fixed at production |
The overflow position is worth singling out. It sets the maximum water level, so on a deep soaking tub an overflow placed low quietly cancels part of the depth you paid for. Ask for the depth to overflow figure rather than assuming it follows the tub's overall depth.
