Can New Shower Trim Fit the Valve Already Inside the Wall?

Only if the maker lists that trim for the valve in the wall. Delta says any 13, 14, 17 or 17T series trim kit it currently makes works with its MultiChoice Universal rough-in. Moen says no, for each of four systems it compares, when asked whether the trim is compatible with other Moen valves. Identify the valve first.

Overview

Why the hidden part decides

A concealed shower control has a valve body in the wall and a trim kit on the wall. Delta’s MultiChoice page ties named trim series to one rough-in valve; Moen’s valve comparison answers no, for each system it compares, to whether the trim is compatible with other Moen valves.

What this guide covers

  • What universal means on a maker’s page
  • How to identify the installed valve
  • What four makers publish about families
  • What the cartridge ships with
  • Cosmetic swap or function change
  • Older valves and adapters
  • Wall depth

Series names, part numbers and dimensions here belong to the named makers. None is a WNS Global specification, product or listing.

From the valve to the order

Can new trim fit a valve that is already in the wall?

New trim fits a concealed valve only when the maker lists that trim for that valve. Delta’s MultiChoice page says any 13, 14, 17 or 17T series trim kit that Delta currently makes will work with its MultiChoice Universal rough-in valve.

Delta presents this as changing style and function without altering the plumbing behind the wall.

Moen’s valve comparison points the other way. For M-Core 2 Series, M-Core 3 Series, PosiTemp and Moentrol, Moen’s answer on whether the trim is compatible with other Moen valves is no.

When a supplier calls a trim universal, ask what it is universal within: a valve family, a generation or a list of part numbers.

TermHow a named maker uses it

How do you identify the valve behind the trim?

Diagram of a concealed shower control in three parts: valve body in the wall, cartridge and trim kit

Start from records, then use the clues the maker publishes, as in Moen’s M-Core identification article. Six steps:

  1. Collect the invoice, manual or installer’s record.
  2. Note the brand and any model code.
  3. Note how the handle moves. Moen lists rotate only, lift and rotate, or push/pull and rotate across its four systems.
  4. Look for the maker’s visual clues. Moen puts M-Core 2 Series temperature indicators at 3 o’clock and 3 Series indicators at 9 and 3 o’clock.
  5. Use the cartridge if it is known. Moen gives 1212 (gray) for M-Core 2 Series and 1213 (blue) for 3 Series.
  6. Record what is still unknown and ask the maker or a qualified installer.

Leave opening a wall or disturbing a pressurized valve to a qualified installer.

What do makers publish about trim and valve families?

Illustration of one valve body linked by ticks to three trims, and one trim linked by a cross to a different valve body

Each maker defines its own family, and the statements differ in reach. Four examples:

MakerSystemWhat the maker says
DeltaMultiChoice Universal rough-inAny 13, 14, 17 or 17T series trim kit Delta currently makes.
MoenM-Core 2 Series, M-Core 3 Series, PosiTemp, MoentrolMoen answers no to whether each system’s trim is compatible with other Moen valves.
hansgroheiBox universal 2All hansgrohe and AXOR finish sets; older ranges need an adapter plate.
SymmonsTemptrol valveSymmons wrote in 2021 that it is compatible with all 14 Temptrol trim collections.

Within M-Core, Moen’s 2 Series to 3 Series article says a 2 Series can be changed to a 3 Series by fitting a 3 Series trim kit, which includes the 1213 flow cartridge, without changing the valve body.

Does the cartridge come with the valve or with the trim?

Illustration of a cartridge inside a valve body in the top row and beside the trim in the bottom row

It depends on the system. Moen’s comparison says the cartridge comes with the trim for M-Core and with the valve for PosiTemp and Moentrol.

SystemWhat the maker says
Delta R10000-LBX valve bodyValve body only; cartridge ships with trim.
Delta T11900 diverter trimIncludes valve cartridge.
Moen M-Core 2 and 3 SeriesCartridge comes with the trim. Flow cartridge included with the trim kit.
Moen PosiTemp and MoentrolCartridge comes with the valve.

Moen gives each of the four systems its own cartridge service kit: 1212, 1213, 1222 and 1225. Ask whether the offered kit includes the cartridge, and which one.

Is it a cosmetic swap or a change of function?

Illustration of a like-for-like trim swap beside a swap to a two-control trim with a cartridge and a second valve body

A listed trim of the same type is a smaller change than a new control function. Three points to separate:

Control type

Delta lists three MultiChoice cartridges: single-function pressure balanced for 13 and 14 Series, dual-function pressure balanced for 17 Series and dual-function thermostatic for 17T. Moving from 14 Series to 17 or 17T means a different cartridge type.

Diverter

Delta’s T11900 diverter trim has three individual and three shared positions and needs its own rough-in, R11000, sold separately. A temperature trim that matches does not tell you which diverter is installed.

Outlet flow

PMI says a lower-flow outlet can significantly compromise an automatic compensating valve’s ability to compensate for inlet pressure changes. PMI adds that ASSE 1016-2011/ASME A112.1016/CSA B125.16-11 requires the maker to state the minimum showerhead flow rate for the valve. CSA Group’s store page shows the 2017 edition, reaffirmed in 2026, and flags that an update is available.

  • Trim kit code and series
  • Cartridge, if it is not in the kit
  • Diverter trim and its own rough-in
  • Showerhead flow against the valve’s stated minimum

Can older valves take new trim through an adapter?

Illustration of an older valve body, an adapter plate and a new round trim in a row

Sometimes, and only by the route the maker publishes. Three examples:

hansgrohe iBox universal

hansgrohe says the iBox universal 1 remains compatible with finish sets launched before 2023. Older finish sets go on the iBox universal 2 with an adapter plate, sold separately. hansgrohe does not state on that page that newer finish sets fit the iBox universal 1; ask before ordering.

Moen Standard valve

Moen’s 145058 adapter kit lets a Standard valve accept new Moentrol trim. Moen excludes six named collections and requires a 7-inch round escutcheon plate on the new trim.

Delta Monitor 1300 and 1400

On Delta’s T13420-PD page, Delta staff answer that this trim can be used with an existing 1300/1400 Series valve and cartridge (RP19804). That is a customer-service answer, not a specification; ask for it in writing.

If the maker publishes no route for a pairing, treat the pairing as not approved.

Can wall depth stop a listed trim from fitting?

Illustration of the same valve behind a thin wall and behind a wall with an added finish layer

Yes. Delta sets the valve depth by the finished wall, and Kohler’s deep rough-in kit guide lists depth kits by trim. What the two makers say:

SourceWhat it says
Delta rough-in instructions, Rev. LFinished wall flush with the front of the plasterguard, ± 1/4 in (models with stops: flush or up to 1/4 in subflush); with a thin wall the plasterguard sits behind the wall.
Kohler deep rough-in kitsListed by trim for five valve models; K-8304 uses universal kit 10350-NA.
Kohler, Revival and Memoirs noteTrims manufactured before 3/20/2009 use deep roughing-in kit 73418. “The deep roughing kits are non-interchangeable.”

How should a buyer check trim compatibility before ordering?

Illustration of a valve body beside a checklist of seven ticked lines

These steps are procurement guidance, not an installation method.

  1. Identify the valve. Brand, family, generation and any manufacturing date.
  2. Ask for the maker’s list. The page or written statement that pairs the new trim with that valve.
  3. Settle the function. Same control type, or a change of cartridge or outlets.
  4. List every part. Trim, cartridge, adapter and diverter trim with its own rough-in.
  5. Check the wall. The installer compares valve depth and any new finish with the instructions.
  6. Check outlet flow. Showerhead flow against the valve maker’s stated minimum.
  7. Keep the answer. File the document behind the match with the order.

When the valve cannot be identified

Record it as unknown and ask for a professionally scoped valve replacement. This guide does not approve cross-brand adapters or promise that a wall can stay closed.

What should you send and ask before a quotation?

Illustration of a document, a photo of a valve body, a message bubble and a trim

A useful request names the installed valve, not only the trim wanted.

QuestionWhy it matters
Which valves is this trim listed for?A universal claim holds within a named family.
Which document shows the match?A traceable answer names its source.
Is the cartridge in the kit?Supplied with the trim or in the valve.
Is an adapter or depth kit needed?Makers list these by valve and trim, sometimes by date.
Does the diverter need its own rough-in?Delta’s diverter trim does.
What is the valve’s minimum outlet flow?PMI says a lower-flow outlet can affect compensation.

Include with your request

  • Valve brand, family and generation, or marked unknown
  • Photos of trim, markings and records
  • Function wanted and number of outlets
  • Wall build-up and any new finish
  • Quantity per room type

FAQ

Shower trim and valve fit: questions buyers ask

Short answers tied to the evidence above.

If the handle shape matches, will the new trim fit?

Not on that basis. Even the same handle motion is not enough: Moen lists M-Core 2 Series and PosiTemp both as rotate only, yet answers no for both on whether the trim is compatible with other Moen valves.

Does MultiChoice mean any Delta trim fits any Delta valve?

No. Delta’s statement covers 13, 14, 17 and 17T series trim kits it currently makes and the MultiChoice Universal rough-in. Delta’s T11900 diverter trim needs a different rough-in, R11000.

Does a shower trim kit include the cartridge?

It depends on the system. Delta ships the MultiChoice cartridge with the trim; Moen says the cartridge comes with the trim for M-Core and with the valve for PosiTemp and Moentrol.

Is the diverter part of the same decision?

Treat it separately. Delta’s T11900 diverter trim needs its own rough-in, R11000.

Can older hansgrohe finish sets go on the iBox universal 2?

Yes, per hansgrohe, through an adapter plate sold separately.

Which finish sets fit the first iBox universal?

hansgrohe says the iBox universal 1 remains compatible with finish sets launched before 2023.

Can a new wall finish affect a trim replacement?

Depth matters: Delta’s instructions set the finished wall flush with the front of the plasterguard, ± 1/4 in, with exceptions for thin walls and models with stops, and Kohler lists deep rough-in kits by trim.

What if there is no visible model number?

Moen identifies M-Core series by cartridge color and indicator position.

Is there an adapter for an old Moen valve?

Moen’s 145058 kit adapts a Standard valve to new Moentrol trim, except six named collections.

Does a new showerhead matter to the valve?

PMI says a lower-flow outlet can compromise an automatic compensating valve’s response to inlet pressure changes.
