Preparation Decides the Result

Nothing recovers from poor preparation. Machine marks, torn grain and dust show through every coat above them, and each additional coat makes them more obvious rather than less.
Timber moisture content is the other half of preparation and the half more often neglected. Wood finished at the wrong moisture content will move after finishing, and movement under a cured film produces cracked joints and split finish lines. Material has to be conditioned to a moisture content appropriate for its destination climate before machining, not after.

Sealing, Including What You Cannot See

A sealer closes the surface so the topcoat sits on it rather than sinking into it. On open-grain timber it also stops the grain absorbing unevenly, which is what produces patchy color.
In bathroom furniture the sealing coat has a second job: it is the moisture barrier, and it is only as good as its least-covered area. Water does not enter a cabinet through the polished front face. It enters through the bottom edge of a door standing in a wet floor, through an unsealed basin cut-out where the top was machined after finishing, or through the back panel against a damp wall.
This is why sealing every face, including hidden ones, is a specification line worth writing rather than assuming. It costs a small amount at the factory and prevents the majority of moisture failures.

The Coating Itself

Modern furniture coating is dominated by two families. Solvent-based systems build film quickly and have a long track record. Water-based systems have improved to the point where they match solvent systems for hardness and clarity in most furniture applications, with far lower emissions in the workshop and in the finished product.
For bathroom furniture the choice is less important than the film build and the number of passes. A single heavy coat cures unevenly and traps solvent; several controlled passes with abrasion between them produce a harder, flatter, more durable film.
Sheen level is worth deciding deliberately rather than by default. A high-gloss finish shows every substrate imperfection and every subsequent scratch. A matte or satin finish hides both, and in a bathroom that will be cleaned frequently, it usually looks better for longer.

Cure Time Is Not Drying Time

A coating is touch-dry long before it is cured. Drying is solvent or water leaving the film; curing is the chemical crosslinking that gives it final hardness, and it continues for days after the surface feels dry.
Packing and stacking a cabinet during that window is one of the most common causes of finish complaints. Foam, film or protective board pressed against an uncured surface leaves an imprint that does not lift, and stacked components can block together.
For a buyer, this is a schedule question worth asking directly. A factory that is compressing lead time by shortening cure will produce cabinets that arrive with pattern marks on the doors, and the cause will be argued about long after the cause was decided.
