How to Plan a Small Bathroom Layout

Small bathroom planning is a clearance problem before it is a design problem. Each fixture needs a defined amount of space in front of it that cannot be shared with the walking route, and those requirements, not the fixtures themselves, are what actually fills a small room. Place them in the right order and a surprisingly small room works well.

Clearances, Not Fixtures

A toilet is about 700 mm deep and needs roughly 600 mm of clear space in front of it. A basin is 500 mm deep and needs 550 to 750 mm in front. A shower needs somewhere to stand and dry.

Add those and it becomes obvious why small bathrooms feel tight even when the fixtures technically fit: the clearances are larger than the fixtures. The good news is that clearances can overlap with the circulation route through the room, and often with each other where the fixtures are not used simultaneously. Making those overlaps work is what small bathroom planning actually is.

Two additional constraints are easy to miss. A vanity drawer needs its full depth clear in front of the cabinet, which is more than walking space. And a shower door swinging outward needs its arc clear of everything, including the bathroom door.

Place Fixtures in Order of Flexibility

Work from the least movable to the most movable, so that the difficult constraint is satisfied first.

The toilet is usually the least flexible, because its waste connection is large and expensive to relocate, and its rough-in distance fixes it relative to the wall. Place it first, respecting its side clearances.

The shower or bath comes next: it needs a drain, a supply and a wall to fix to, and its footprint is the largest single object in the room.

The basin is the most flexible fixture, because its waste is small and can usually be moved without difficulty, and its size can be adjusted more freely than anything else. Placing it last means it absorbs whatever space and shape remains, which is exactly what it should do.

Storage comes last of all, in whatever is left, which is why a niche or a wall-hung unit so often outperforms a floor cabinet in a small room.

The Moves That Actually Buy Space

A handful of changes make a real difference, and they are worth more than any amount of visual trickery.

Rehang the door, or change it. A door swinging into a small bathroom sterilizes the largest single area in the room. Swinging it outward, or fitting a sliding or pocket door, frequently transforms a layout at almost no cost.

Go wall-hung. A wall-hung vanity and a wall-hung toilet expose the floor, which makes the room read larger, lets it be cleaned in one pass, and removes the plinth footprint. Both require planning before the wall is closed.

Reduce the vanity depth. Every inch of vanity depth is taken from the circulation in front, and an 18-inch cabinet in place of a 21-inch one is felt every time someone turns around.

Replace the bath with a compact soaking tub, or with a walk-in shower. A 1200 mm deep soaking tub fits where a 1700 mm bath cannot, and a walk-in screen needs no door swing at all.

Storage Without Footprint

The last problem in a small bathroom is always storage, and the solutions that work are the ones that occupy no floor.

A niche formed in the wall costs nothing in floor area and is effectively free if it is planned before the wall is built. A long horizontal niche holds more than most people expect and reads as a deliberate line rather than an addition.

Recessed or slim mirror cabinets provide eye-level storage; a surface-mounted one projects 100 to 150 mm at head height, which in a narrow room is worth thinking about carefully.

And a vanity with proper drawers, including a U-shaped top drawer working around the plumbing, holds far more usable content than a cupboard of the same volume, because a drawer presents its contents and a cupboard hides them.
