Shower bar purpose

Shower Slide Bar vs Grab Bar: Do Not Assume the Same Function

A slide bar holds a hand shower; a grab bar is for a person to hold. Delta says its 57051 slide bar “is not designed to be used as a grab bar”; Moen documents carry a similar caution. If anyone may hold the bar for support, specify one its maker designates as a grab bar, installed to that maker’s instructions.

Overview

Why two similar bars are specified differently

Delta describes its 51600 slide bar / grab bar as a 24 in bar, and in a product-page answer gives its 57051 slide bar as 24 in too. The difference is in what the maker says each bar is for.

Section 609 of the ADA Accessibility Standards gives grab bars a size, a wall clearance and a structural strength. Section 608.6 treats a vertical bar for an adjustable-height shower head as something that must not obstruct those grab bars.

What this guide covers

  • What each bar is for
  • Reading the designation
  • Maker cautions on slide bars
  • Bars sold for both functions
  • US grab-bar requirements
  • Both bars on one wall
  • Wall fixing statements

Loads, dimensions and cautions here belong to the named makers and standards. None is a WNS Global specification, rating or listing.

From function to wall fixing

What is the difference between a slide bar and a grab bar?

A slide bar carries an adjustable holder for a hand shower; a grab bar is there for a person to hold.

Peerless’s slide bar / grab bar instructions say to use the bar for assistance only, and warn that it may not provide its designed support unless the instructions are strictly followed.

ASTM’s F446-19(2023) is a consumer safety specification for grab bars and accessories in the bathing area.

TermWhat it means here
Slide barA wall bar with a movable hand-shower holder.
Grab barA wall bar a person holds for support.
Slide bar / grab barOne bar its maker names for both jobs.

How do you tell which kind of bar a product is?

Diagram of a slide bar with a question mark and six places to read its function: name, caution, spec notes, stated load, fixing and parts list

Read the maker’s documents, not the bar. The named makers on this page state the function in these places.

  1. Product name: Delta and Moen name combined bars as both.
  2. Cautions: Moen prints one on a slidebar instruction sheet.
  3. Specification notes: Moen’s T8346 sheet carries one too.
  4. Stated load, with its condition.
  5. Fixing instructions: studs, backing or anchors.
  6. List of included parts.

If none of these names a support function, treat the bar as a slide bar only.

What do makers say about leaning on a slide bar?

Delta and Moen say the named slide bar is not a grab bar; Kallista warns against excessive weight on its slidebar. Four documents:

ProductDocumentWhat the maker says
Delta 57051Product page answerThe bar is not a grab bar by design.
Moen 3856, 3876 and A706 seriesMT040A instruction sheetCaution against use as a grab bar.
Moen T8346 seriesSpecification sheetIts 30 in slide bar is not a grab bar by design.
Kallista P21654 and P21664Installation instructionsRisk of product damage: keep excessive weight and downward force off the slidebar.

None of the four documents read gives a load for the slide bar.

Which bars are sold as both a slide bar and a grab bar?

Some makers sell one bar for both jobs and say so in the name. Three named examples:

ProductWhat the maker statesIncluded
Delta 51600Delta calls it an ADA compliant grab bar when installed per the accessibility guidelines.Hose and wall elbow; hand shower sold separately.
Peerless P60210 and P62410Peerless rates it for persons up to 300 pounds when properly installed; for assistance only, not entire weight.Hand shower, hose and six wood screws.
Moen 52224GBP25 and 52236GBP25Stainless steel slide bar grab bar, 24 in or 36 in; Moen’s sheet says it includes an ADA compliant grab bar and gives no load.Hand-held shower, drop ell, hose and mounting hardware.

Delta and Peerless attach an installation condition to the ADA wording. The Moen sheet read attaches none: the wording is Moen’s, and the installation instructions and the wall decide.

What do US standards ask of a grab bar?

Illustration of a grab bar with a thickness mark and two force arrows, above a wall section showing the gap between bar and wall

Section 609 of the ADA Accessibility Standards sets a grab bar’s size, clearance, fittings, position and strength. Confirm with the local authority whether it applies to a project.

Size

Section 609.2.1 gives circular grab bars an outside diameter of 1¼ in minimum and 2 in maximum.

Wall clearance

Section 609.3 sets the space between wall and bar at 1½ in. The U.S. Access Board’s bathing rooms guide calls this an absolute dimension, not a minimum.

Fittings and position

Section 609.6 says grab bars shall not rotate within their fittings. Section 609.4 places them horizontally, 33 in to 36 in above the finish floor to the top of the gripping surface.

Strength

Section 609.8 names a vertical or horizontal force of 250 pounds applied at any point on the grab bar, fastener, mounting device or supporting structure.

  • Ask for the outside diameter
  • Ask for the wall clearance
  • Ask for the stated load and its condition
  • Ask which standard is named

Can a slide bar share a wall with a grab bar?

Illustration of a vertical slide bar with a hand shower mounted above a horizontal grab bar with a marked gap between them

The ADA Standards allow a vertical bar for the shower head, provided it does not obstruct the grab bars. Three points:

Do not obstruct

Section 608.6 says an adjustable-height shower head on a vertical bar shall be installed so as not to obstruct the use of grab bars.

Gap above the grab bar

The Access Board guide says the vertical bar must leave at least 1½ in above the grab bar and cannot extend behind it.

Other projecting objects

Section 609.3 asks for 12 in minimum to projecting objects above a grab bar, and 1½ in minimum below and at the ends. Its exception lets shower controls, shower fittings and other grab bars sit 1½ in minimum above.

Confirm the layout with the local authority.

What do makers say about the wall fixing?

Illustration of two wall sections: a thin bar on a short anchor in the wall board and a thick bar on long screws into a wood stud

Peerless and Bobrick state loads only for a properly installed bar; Moen’s grab bar page gives a load with no installation condition. Five documents, five fixings:

ProductKindFixing the maker describes
Moen MT040A slidebarSlide barThree plastic screw anchors in ¼ in holes.
Kallista P21654 and P21664Slide barWall backing and stud bracing; Kallista asks for wood screws capable of 300 lbs each: a screw requirement, not a slidebar rating.
Peerless P60210 and P62410Slide bar / grab barPeerless: both ends into a wall stud; at least two of three screws per end in the stud.
Moen Home Care 24 in grab barGrab barMoen’s product page gives up to 500 lbs and names SecureMount, with no anchor or installation condition. The figure is Moen’s; the installation instructions and the wall decide.
Bobrick B-6806 seriesGrab barBobrick gives loads over 900 pounds for its bars with 1½ in wall clearance, if properly installed; anchors and screws not included; backing before the wall is finished.

How should a buyer specify a shower bar?

Illustration of a specification card with two ticked rows, one for a hand shower and one for a hand gripping a bar

State the function first, then ask for the documents that show it. These steps are procurement guidance, not an accessibility review.

  1. Decide who will hold the bar. Say in the brief whether any user may lean on it.
  2. Write two lines. Hand-shower adjustment and body support are separate requirements.
  3. Ask for the designation. Name, cautions and specification notes of the offered model.
  4. Record the stated load. With maker, model and installation condition; if none is stated, ask for the instructions.
  5. Record the fixing. Stud, backing or anchor, and who supplies the fasteners.
  6. Check the wall layout. A vertical slide bar must not obstruct a required grab bar.

When a look-alike is proposed

Treat a substitute as a new product. Check its designated function, stated load and fixing before its finish.

What should you send and ask before a quotation?

Illustration of a document, a message bubble and a wall bar with a sliding holder

A complete request states whether people will hold the bar for support.

QuestionWhy it matters
Is the bar designated as a grab bar?Named slide bars carry cautions against that use.
What load is stated, and on what condition?Peerless and Bobrick qualify loads with proper installation; Moen’s Home Care grab bar page gives no condition.
Which standard does the maker name?Delta and Peerless attach an installation condition to ADA wording.
What fixing and wall backing are required?Stud, backing and anchors differ by document.
Which parts are included?A hand shower or fasteners may be sold separately.

Include with your request

  • Project location and building type
  • Whether users will hold the bar for support
  • Wall construction at the bar
  • Grab bars already on the wall
  • Quantity per room type

FAQ

Slide bars and grab bars: questions buyers ask

Short answers tied to the evidence above.

Can a shower slide bar be used as a grab bar?

Only a bar its maker names as a grab bar, installed as that maker instructs. Delta says its 57051 slide bar is not designed for that use; Moen’s MT040A sheet cautions against it.

Is there a bar that is both a slide bar and a grab bar?

Some makers name one. Delta’s 51600, Peerless’s P60210 and Moen’s 52224GBP25 are each named as a slide bar and grab bar; each maker’s installation instructions and limits still apply. Peerless says to use its bar for assistance only, not entire weight.

What force does the ADA grab-bar section name?

Section 609.8 of the ADA Standards names a vertical or horizontal force of 250 pounds at any point on the bar, its fixing or the supporting structure.

Does an ADA claim on a combined bar cover any installation?

Delta and Peerless limit their ADA grab-bar wording to bars installed per the accessibility guidelines.

Can a slide bar be mounted above a grab bar?

The Access Board guide allows it if the bar does not obstruct the grab bar, leaves at least 1½ in above it and does not extend behind it.

Do the ADA Standards require a vertical grab bar in a shower?

The U.S. Access Board guide says the ADA Standards do not require one at bathing fixtures. The same guide notes that ICC A117.1, referenced by the International Building Code, requires an 18 in minimum vertical grab bar at transfer showers and bathtubs.

How thick is a grab bar under the ADA Standards?

Section 609.2.1 gives circular grab bars an outside diameter of 1¼ in to 2 in.

Is the hand shower included with a combined bar?

Delta sells the hand shower for its 51600 separately; the Peerless P60210 includes one.

Do grab bars come with their wall anchors?

Bobrick says anchor devices and mounting screws are not included with its grab bars and must be specified separately.

Is there a product standard for bathing-area grab bars?

ASTM F446-19(2023) is an active consumer safety specification for grab bars and accessories in the bathing area.

Summary

Specify the support function explicitly

Delta and Moen say their named slide bars are not grab bars. State whether people will hold the bar for support, and record the maker’s designation, stated load, installation condition and fixing.

Key points

  • A slide bar holds a hand shower.
  • Support needs a bar its maker designates, installed as instructed.
  • Peerless and Bobrick state loads with conditions.
  • Keep the grab bar unobstructed.
  • Fixing follows the maker’s sheet.
